AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
144 PM PDT Sat May 3 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Cooler temperatures with strong and blustery northerly
to northwesterly winds. Continued cool and windy with strong coastal
northerlies again on Sunday. Robust northeast winds and warming
expected for Monday. Dry weather and above normal interior warmth
expected all next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...The pressure gradient continues to strengthen as an
elongated lobe/upper level trough swings through the western Pacific
U.S. Northerly winds are already gusting up, 25-40mph at the surface
exposing near coastal areas to stout gusts. Minus higher elevations
above 1000 ft there will be less exposure to winds for the interior
for our CWA. The interior valley will see high winds to the west of
Interstate 5, which could be hazardous for semi-tractor trailers. As
far as convection goes, most of the thunderstorm potential is also
to the east of our CWA with a wide swath of CAPE at 350-500 j/kg for
the north valley all the way to Nevada. Lightning is already being
detected via satellite products/ENTLN, mostly over the central
Sierras and western Nevada.
Otherwise, a few wrap around showers may occur over the eastern
fringes of Lake into early this evening as the closed low meanders
southward over central California. Drier air and clearer skies
tonight should make for a good set up for longwave cooling in the
interior valleys if winds go calm. Frost will be possible,
especially in Trinity and portions of eastern Humboldt and northern
Mendocino. There is a chance for freezing temperatures in a few of
the high mountain valleys, specifically Hayfork and Ruth in southern
Trinity.
Strong and gusty coastal northerlies are expected to continue on
Sunday. Northerlies will be a tad stronger for the North Coast as
pressure gradients tighten between an offshore ridge and surface low
pressure over the interior. Peak gusts around > 45 mph are highly
probable for the coastal headlands and ridges.
A 925mb speed max (35-45kt) will form over the central valley Sunday
night into Monday. Robust N-NE winds are expected over the higher
elevations, especially eastern Mendocino and eastern Lake Counties
by early Monday. Peak gusts for the ridges and wind prone areas will
probably reach or exceed 50 mph. Windy conditions expected to
continue on Monday, but will most likely diminish for coastal areas
as the air mass warms and stability increases.
High temperatures in the interior will warm above seasonal averages
on Monday and probably remain above average on Tue.
Highs may reach or exceed 90F at Ukiah as a thermal trough develops
and 850mb increase to 15-18C. Robust offshore flow will initially
keep coastal stratus limited in coverage and duration or non-
existent Monday and probably into Tuesday.
Upper ridge axis over the PAC NW is forecast to shift southward
around mid week. Precip chances remain low (<5%) as a trough over
the Gulf of Alaska digs southward over the central Pacific. Near
shore southerly wind reversals may result in stratus by mid week.
Also a decaying front may bring a shallow push of moist air and a
few hundredths of coastal drizzle Wed-Thu. Interior temps should
trend down some mid week, and then warm up again late week. DB/EYS
&&
.AVIATION...Ceilings have generally lifted and are slowly but
surly clearing today as gusty northerly winds increase and a weak
cold front moves to the east. Occasional MVFR ceilings are possible
through the afternoon, yet VFR conditions are expected by the
evening as cooler, dry air dissipates clouds. Gusty northwest winds
are forecast at all inland and coastal terminals, with the
highest winds occurring this afternoon. LLT due to a Low Level
Jet Streak is possible at KACV and KUKI this today as the
strongest gusts (northerlies up to 40kts @ 1000-1500ft AGL) may
not mix down to the surface. VFR conditions are likely to continue
through the night.
&&
.MARINE...A passing cold front has squeezes the surface
pressure gradient creating increasingly strong northerly winds
across all the coastal waters. Will will continue to increase
through the afternoon, peaking with Gale Force gusts of 40 to 45 kts
in the afternoon in all forecast zones. Gales continue into Monday,
with the strongest gusts in the afternoons and evenings of today,
Sunday and Monday. Associated wind waves churching up a very steep,
chaotic sea state with waves of 12-15 ft at 10 seconds expected
through the weekend into next week. Winds begin to ease Tuesday as
the weather pattern changes, and continue to gradually ease into the
middle of next week.
